OLYMPIC HISTORY ON STAMPS
This is one of my thematic stamp exhibits. It depicts Olympic history from 1896 to now, mostly focusing on Olympic medalists and events commemorated on stamps. The exhibit includes each Olympic event that has been commemorated on a stamp (or a souvenir sheet, or a cover, or another philatelic item) that I have in my collection.
Note that not every Olympic result is commemorated directly. Sometimes, an athlete wins a medal in a specific Olympic event, and there are no stamps (at least not in my collection) that would depict said achievement – yet said Olympian might be commemorated on other stamp(-s) that has(-ve) nothing to do with that event, or even that specific Olympiad. In that case, the medalist’s name contains a link to all the stamps that portray them.
Since this is a virtual exhibit, the same stamp can be used several times in order to illustrate several achievements by the same athlete or different achievements by different athletes (if a stamp features several athletes). I generally try avoiding this, but sometimes it is inevitable, so bear with me. (And yes, I know this probably breaks all the established exhibiting rules. No need to tell me that).
The exhibit consists of many sections, each one dedicated to a specific Olympiad. Within the Olympiad, exhibit is organized by a sport (in alphabetical order), and within a sport -- by a specific event. Normally, men’s events precede women’s ones. In the end of each section, some information on medal count winners for the depicted Olympiad is given.
Unlike my topical collections, this exhibit will probably never be “complete”, but I will always try to make it better and more informative by acquiring more stamps and other philatelic items.
